Black Queens have made a history
The Black Queens of Ghana have made history by reaching the semifinals of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the first time since 2016. They achieved this feat by beating Algeria 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regular and extra time. The match was a closely contested one, with both teams creating chances but unable to score in 120 minutes of play. Stella Nyamekye thought she had given Ghana the lead in the 27th minute, but her goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
- Ghana's goalkeeper, Cynthia Konlan, was the hero of the penalty shootout, saving two crucial penalties from Marine Dafeur and Inès Belloumou to secure Ghana's win.
- The Black Queens will now face hosts Morocco in the semifinals on July 22, 2025, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with kickoff set for 19:00 GMT ¹ ² ³.
Semifinal Expectations:
- Morocco, the host nation, finished as runners-up in the previous edition of WAFCON and will be a tough opponent for the Black Queens.
- Ghana will be aiming to reach their first WAFCON final since 2006, and the team will need to put up a strong performance to overcome Morocco's resilient defense ⁴ ⁵. BABJ28054 Emmanuella Afari-Sackey
