  The government has inaugurated a new nine-member Board of Directors for Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), marking a fresh chapter for the state-owned bank which was formed during Ghana’s financial sector reforms.

  The inauguration ceremony, held in Accra, was led by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. In his remarks, Dr. Forson reminded the new board that CBG was set up with significant support from taxpayers’ money, amounting to almost GH¢30 billion during the financial clean-up exercise that restructured the banking industry a few years ago. He therefore urged the new leadership to manage the bank’s affairs with utmost responsibility, transparency, and patriotism.

  He stressed that the government will continue to provide the necessary capital support to strengthen the bank, but cautioned the board against wasteful expenditure and excessive perks. According to the Minister, the era where state-owned banks paid huge salaries, allowances, and board fees at the expense of taxpayers must come to an end. He tasked the new directors to lead by example and help restore public trust in Ghana’s financial system.

The newly appointed Board Chairman, Mr. Ernest Mawuli Agbesi, thanked the President and the Minister for the confidence reposed in them. He assured stakeholders that the board will carry out its mandate diligently to ensure that CBG remains stable, profitable, and capable of supporting Ghana’s economic growth.

Mr. Agbesi also pledged that the board will prioritise good corporate governance, proper risk management, and strict compliance with banking regulations to safeguard depositors’ funds and protect the huge state investment in the bank.

Consolidated Bank Ghana was formed in August 2018 following the merger of five struggling local banks whose licences were revoked by the Bank of Ghana. Since then, CBG has operated as a universal bank fully owned by the state, providing banking services across all 16 regions of the country.

The appointment of the new board is expected to strengthen the bank’s leadership and help it play a more active role in supporting small businesses, expanding financial inclusion, and contributing to the stability of the country’s banking sector.

Dr. Forson concluded by encouraging the board to justify the trust placed in them by working diligently to secure the bank’s future and protect the interest of Ghanaians.
