Authorities in northern and western China remain on high alert as torrential rains continue to trigger flash floods and landslides, following deadly weather events across the country. Despite having a nationwide weather forecasting system, Chinese scientists acknowledge the difficulty of making precise predictions for localized storms—especially in rural areas. Meng Gao, a climate modeling expert at Hong Kong Baptist University, told Reuters that climate change and complex terrain make accurate forecasting particularly challenging in those regions.

Last July, seasonal “plum rains,” which coincide with the plum-ripening season, caused over $10 billion in economic losses across China.
